FAQ
What sort of things will I learn?
Every new student learns the physical and mental fundamentals of wushu first. These include basic kicks, stances, punches and blocks culminating in the first Five Stance Form. Once mastered, you will then move on to more advanced forms as your skills increase. You will also learn the history behind each form, where it came from and the philosophies behind its practice. Understanding the mental side of Wushu is just as important as the physical training. Wushu is very broad and encompasses many styles and philosophies that can cater for all ages and ability.
Who will be teaching me?
You will be coached by some of the best practitioners of wushu in Australia under the guidance of internationally renowned Principal Juliana Zhu. Not only will you learn from Principal Juliana, you will also be taught by the senior coaches who have benefited from years of personal coaching under Principal Juliana. All the coaches have been given the benefit of her years of coaching experience, and some are Australian Champions and International medal winners, such as William, Andrew, and Amanda, amongst others. For more information on them and our other coaches, see the instructors page.
Is Wushu Dangerous?
Yes. Practising any martial arts is inherently dangerous. However, the Wushu Sports Academy’s experienced instructors teach to minimise the risk of any injury occuring during training, performance or application. By using effective stretching and body conditioning exercises the body becomes used to executing Wushu maneavours and students develop the ability to quickly recover from any set-backs.
Will I be able to defend myself?
If your aim in taking up Wushu is to learn self defence then there are several areas that you can concentrate on. While Wushu is generally taught through non-contact forms, the range of styles covered is diverse enough that you can focus on styles emphasising either self defense or competition/display. Our instructors will work with you as you become more experienced to help work out what fits best with your personal goals.
Can I learn weapons?
Yes. Wushu apparatus may be taught to a student once they have passed the necessary training and reached a certain skill level in the elementary open-hand forms. Weapon training is carefully guided and follows strict safety requirements that are associated with learning the apparatus. It should be noted that wushu apparatus do not have cutting edges as they are primarly used in Form competitions and demonstrations.
