About the School

Our aim

The aim of the Wushu Sports Academy is to promote Chinese martial arts in Australia for both competiton and self-improvement. Many traditional and contemporary Chinese martial arts styles are taught within our curriculum including: Changquan, Nanquan, Shaolinquan, Xinyi Liuhe, Tai Chi, Bagua, Animal styles and push hands amongst others. Through raising the profile and working towards improving the national standard of wushu, we hope to be able to forward the movement of wushu to an Olympic level.

Styles

Chinese wushu consists of a wealth of knowledge and skills - our academy teaches numerous ways of practice including: northern kicking, southern punching, using various wushu apparatus, push hands, self-defence, sparring forms, and san shou.
A brief introductory description of some of the styles taught are provided below:

  • Changquan, or northern fist, adopts a graceful, circular style of movement and is denoted by its long punches and kicks.
  • Nanquan, or southern fist, is defined by its strong, well-rooted, explosive set of movements that require strength and power from the upper body, especially in the arms, forearms and hands.
  • Xinyi Liuhe Quan adopts a method of attack of ten animals to make quick grabs, catches and close, explosive attacks.
  • Shaolin fist forms use long distance attacks, requiring quick and forceful reactions. The major types of movements include long range punching/kicking, close body defence and tumbling.
  • Tai Chi utilises the opponents force in close body defence. Major types of movements used include holding, pushing, catching, elbowing, breaking, leaning, twirling, twisting, drilling, rolling and so on.
  • The various weapons (used in modern wushu competitions) include the broadsword, straight sword, spear, and staff, amongst others.

Both traditional and contemporary wushu techniques can only be taught and made clear in application by experienced instructors.
